Project Idea

Purpose

Our Berkeley middle schools are preparing for the second annual Battle of the Books. This grant request is to be able to provide a meal for the participating students and their families. What is a Battle of the Books, you ask? Grade level teams from each of the middle schools have been reading books from a shared list over over twenty titles. After months of preparation (reading!) at each of the sites, the school teams are facing off against each other, dueling with their well-read minds to see which team per grade level most thoroughly internalized the books. The program and the competition are a real celebration of reading and community-building. On Thursday, April 13 at 6:30 pm we will have our Grand Finale Competition, and would like to launch the evening by providing dinner for the participating students and their families. Will you help us?

Methods

We will contract with Growing Leaders, the student leadership training program coordinated by Matt Tsang, to provide the main entree for the dinner. We will provide cookies and beverages to round out the meal. It will be served buffet style, with ample seating space in the Multi-Purpose Room at the Berkeley Adult School. We will keep it simple and sumptuous. This worked will last year.
